NHS Payments

The NHS Payments tools help users explore published payments to practices and PCNs.

When To Use It

Use payment benchmarking when you need to:

  • understand published payment totals;
  • compare categories of income;
  • review payment per registered or weighted patient where available;
  • identify questions for finance or contract review.

What It Shows

  • total practice or PCN payments;
  • payment line items and grouped categories;
  • per-patient comparison measures where available;
  • comparison against PCN, sub-ICB, region, England, or similar practices.

How To Use It

  1. Select a practice or PCN.
  2. Choose the reporting year.
  3. Review total payments.
  4. Move to category breakdowns.
  5. Use per-patient views to make comparisons more meaningful.

Interpretation Notes

Payments can differ for many legitimate reasons, including:

  • contract type;
  • local enhanced services;
  • dispensing status;
  • premises arrangements;
  • population need;
  • one-off payments or adjustments;
  • PCN or collaborative service delivery models.

Payment data is useful for benchmarking and questions. It does not by itself explain the reason for a difference.

Reporting Tip

When quoting payment figures, include the year, organisation, payment category, and whether the figure is total, per registered patient, or per weighted patient.
